Hardwood Flooring: Solid Hardwood

Solid wood flooring is 100% hardwood milled from lumber. As a natural material, hardwood reacts to changes in its setting, like moisture and extreme temperatures, which cause solidwood to shrink or expand. All solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished if needed over the years. Solid hardwood is not recommended for installation below ground level or in bathrooms.

Hardwood Flooring: Engineered Hardwood

Engineered wood flooring is built up of layers ofwood. It consists of three to ten layers, called plies, that are glued together. This multi-ply structure gives engineered wood superior stability, greater than solid wood, which reduces concerns associated with shrinking and expanding when temperature and humidity change. Engineered wood can be installed below ground level making it a great choice for finished basements.

Hardwood Flooring: Prefinished vs. Site-finished

Hardwood from many of our suppliers comes pre-finished for a no fuss, no muss installation. There's no dust from sanding, no fumes from chemicals, no waiting for the finish to dry. These floors are warranted to last longer than site-finished floors–typically 5 to 35 years, for residential use versus 3 to 5 years. This is because factory applied urethane finishes are much tougher and longer lasting than site-applied finishes. If you like the look of site-finished flooring, but want the durability of prefinished flooring, choose a product with a square end and edge.

Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid Hardwood From Armstrong

Solid wood flooring refers to hardwood flooring made from one solid piece of lumber.

Solid wood flooring is available in a variety of sizes and species ranging from pine to Brazilian cherry.

Hardwood products also include different gloss levels and surface treatments like hand-scraping or distressing.

Sweep or vacuum the floor frequently to remove dirt before it can scratch or be ground into the floor's surface. Wipe up spills immediately.

For spot cleaning, use hardwood floor cleaner and follow the manufacturers recommended cleaning procedures.

Hardwood Performance: Installation Area

With the exception of bathrooms and laundry rooms, solid hardwood flooring is great in any room on the ground floor or above.

Below ground, in basements where air and moisture issues can be factors, only engineered hardwood, or laminate, vinyl or linoleum flooring are recommended

Engineered Hardwood

Engineered Hardwood From Armstrong

Engineered hardwood flooring is real wood flooring, but is more stable than solid wood and is less susceptible to shrinking and expanding with changes in temperatures and humidity.

The durability of engineered hardwood is increased by constructing the floor through the use of multiple wood layers.

- Blot up spills and spots immediately (Standing moisture will penetrate into the wood causing irreversible discoloration and damages.)

- Vacuum, dust mop, or sweep the floor to minimize abrasive grit and dirt. Note: Do not use vacuum with beater bars.

- Periodically clean floor with WEARMAX HARDWOOD FLOOR CLEANER (Never use other cleaning products or detergents.)

- ALWAYS WIPE DRY IMMEDIATELY until no moisture is visible on the floor.

- Do not use wax, polish, oil soap, abrasive cleaners, steel wool, scouring powder, or ANY appreciable amount of water.

Hardwood Installation: Installation

The installation options available to you will vary depending on the width, thickness, and construction of the hardwood you choose and where you are going to install it.

Products with Lock&Fold® technology are the fastest and easiest to install without glue, staples or nails and are perfect for individuals looking to install their own flooring.  Engineered hardwood can typically be stapled, glued, or floated (product attaches to itself, not the subfloor) the options will vary depending on product chosen.
